Worship & Worship Arts

"The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever"
-The Westminster Shorter Catechism

At Christ Presbyterian Church we take the worship of God seriously as we believe corporate worship is essential to the Christian life and is prescribed in scripture. Our goal is to glorify and enjoy God through a liturgical service of worship in which we seek to have a basis in scripture for every aspect of our Sunday worship. Simply stated, the theology that drives our worship is "God speaks (through his word), we respond (through song, confession, our giving and prayers etc.)". Musically, we continually strive to find a balance between longstanding hymn favorites and songs that reflect a more contemporary musical language, yet meet the standards of theological richness found in the older hymns. We blend these two elements in our worship and seek to conscientiously foster an atmosphere of grace as related to different musical preferences (see the links to our current worship folder and audio recordings of recent CPC sermons).

The Music Team

The primary purpose of the music team is to assist the congregation in the worship and celebration of God, giving him glory, which is due His name. At CPC we desire to blend the best of the Christian hymnody tradition with more contemporary songs written using old hymn and scripture texts. Our congregation represents a wonderfully diverse group of Christians with a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. We use a variety of instruments for different songs as the instrument helps to convey the meaning of the text and tone of the music. The music team has recorded a CD called Into Thy Light , which represents the types of worship music at CPC.

Special Services

For Christmas and Good Friday we present an outreach service to celebrate these two events in the life of Christ. We combine our best music with dramatic presentations of the story. These have been wonderful events where we creatively interweave drama and music to express the glory of Christ's life in a way that glorifies God and brings the overwhelming impact of the story to bear on the lives of the congregation.

Arts Celebration

Once a year we have a giant evening event where we celebrate and enjoy the various artistic gifts God has blessed us with. We get the children, amateur musicians, and professionals all to perform. It is truly a wonderful time where kids who just started their instruments a year ago play on the same stage as our professional musicians. This is also an opportunity for adults who occasionally play an instrument at home for fun to perform publicly. In addition to music, this event incorporates poetry, dramatic readings, photography, drawing, and painting. We sincerely desire to foster a church environment that both enjoys the arts and encourages people to partake in the arts.

Concerts

Our professional and amateur musicians present a variety of concerts throughout the year. We offer evening concerts involving the full range of these talented performers. A single concert may involve piano, classical guitar, violin, clarinet, saxophone, and voice. In April we offer a weekly lunchtime concert series targeted towards the downtown business community. These 45-minute concerts feature individual artists who both play and talk about their selections. This is a wonderful opportunity to open our doors to the community with fine music.

Choral Music at CPC

Our part time choir sings a blend of spectacular sacred composers (Mozart, Bach, Victoria, Faure, etc.) and simpler, more contemporary choral anthems. We try to foster an atmosphere where any interested person can sing with us (no matter their ability), but we still take time to rehearse and perform some of the great sacred masterpieces. The choir is featured on the Christmas and Good Friday services and sings occasionally during the rest of the year.
